Short description:
The land of the seven fortresses, SIEBENBURGER, the land of the Saxons, in the northernmost area of them, Bistriţa, a small vineyard with selected wines is growing. The arrival of the Saxons around the 1260s, documented as early as 1430. The German scholar Johannes Troster declares in the book "Das Alt und neu Teutsche Dacia", Nuremberg, 1666, that the wines from Teaca (Tekendorf) are the best white wines that ever tasted.
In the modern era, at the beginning of the 60s, modern viticulture and winemaking were introduced in the Teaca winemaking center under the coordination of an engineer from the Drăgăşani region. After 1990, viticulture in the area entered a sharp decline.
In 2013, one of the last Saxons in the region, Zaig Eckehardt, tries to unite the Saxon traditions of several centuries ago, with modern technology and an amalgam of old and new ideas, interweaving technique and new technology, with art, trying to keep the imprint of the place and of the people." Engelhardt also joins from 2022. Together they will carry on the fame of the wonderful wines, of German origin, from Teaca, Bistrita-Năsăud.
The Zaig wine house is located in the town of Teaca. We have 13 hectares of noble vines, planted in 2013. It is a family winery with a production capacity of up to 700 HL of wine. The method used to obtain the wine is the classic-modern one. For fermentation, we only use stainless steel vessels, with thermal control, and for maturation we use oak barrels.
The winery has a hall with stainless steel tanks for the fermentation of fresh must, an enclosure for keeping the wine, as well as a cellar intended for maturation. We also want to keep the old vineyards which, even if they are not the most profitable because they require quite meticulous work, we keep them to keep a bridge between the generations – the old and the new generation. From the old varieties we kept Feteasca Albă, Muscat Ottonel, Neuburger and Traminer.
The history of Saxon wine from Bistrita, goes, confidently, further!
