Short description:

A family business, Casa Bolgiu Winery has an uninterrupted four-generation tradition, the vineyards belonging to the members of the family. The owner’s sons are the ones who are responsible for the vineyards’ management and care as well as for the wine production, both of them graduating the Faculty of Horticulture, University of Agronomic Science and Veterinary Medicine, Bucharest. The first generation of vine growers was that of Nicolae C. Bolgiu whose initials are engraved on the frontispiece that is watching the cellar’s entrance gate. During the interwar years, he was one of the three vine growers in Urlati, together with the Basilescu and the Tiganescu families. The construction of the stone cellar goes back to this same period, being known as the Bolgiu Cellar until the present-day. Between the two Wars he sent his son, Nicolae N. Bolgiu, to study at the School of Viticulture in Chisinau, which at the time was affiliated to the renowned Institute in Montpellier, France.

During the communist regime, Nicolae N. Bolgiu was a truly appreciated viticulturist and he was in charge of the agricultural state enterprise. His son, Valeriu Bolgiu, has learnt the secrets of vineyard caring and wine production from a very early age. The company, as it is known nowadays, was registered in 2006, after the family’s ceded lands were returned to them following the property retrocession instituted at the beginning of the 1990’s. The grapevine is between 25 and 40 years old.
