Short description:
Documents attesting the vineyard date back to 1773.
Tohani Romania has always played an important part in the history of the country. In 1930, Prince Nicolae of Romania, the brother of Kind Carol II, becomes the owner of this vast estate. On these lands he meets Ioana Dumitrescu Doletti, the daughter of a local nobleman, and he instantly falls in love with her. The two live their intense romance against all odds and prejudices of the times. Despite restrictions imposed by his royal status, Prince Radu and Ioana Doletti secretly marry on October 28th, 1931, at the Town Hall of Tohani and in the local church. The prince lost his royal rights yet Ioana Doletti and the Tohani estate remained his greatest passions until the end.
In 1948, Tohani Romania becomes state owned and the cellars are built. The cellars remain to this day a great place to visit as a museum that preserves the only collection winery in the area, with over 100,000 bottles of wine stored.
In 2000, the company is privatized and goes through an extensive modernization process. A new factory is built, equipped with state-of-the-art technology; a new infrastructure is put in place, and the vine is replanted on large areas. The South-African winemaker, Albertus Van Der Merwe, joins the team in Tohani, offering his “New World” experience and influence and blending it with the tradition and craftsmanship offered by Tohani’s master winemaker, Ion Marin.
In 2012, Tohani Romania becomes an official supplier of the Royal House of Romania, an acknowledgment of the quality and values that marked the company's evolution towards the status of wine creator.
From the point of view of the terroir, Tohani vineyard has an area of 500 hectares, of which 366 hectares of vine on fruit, and is located on the 45° parallel, like the famous Bordeaux vineyards. Located in the middle of the Dealu Mare region, Tohani spreads on 7 sunny hills, oriented towards the South-East, so the grapes enjoy 14 more days of sun than in any other vine area in the country.
In the summer of 2018, Tohani Romania initiated the VALAHORUM project. APOGEUM, Mierla Alba Wine Cellars (both from Dealu Mare region) and Mennini Wine Cellar (from Dragasani region) joined the project. VALAHORUM remains an open project which aims to offer the landmark wines of Romania. The Valahorum wine portfolio contains several collections, one named after the project itself, as well as Apogeum – Feteasca Neagra, Mierla Alba – a red blend, and Paolo Mennini – Negru de Dragasani.
